5 More Ways Your Home Could be Outdated

#6. Laminate countertops.

These were popular about 50 years ago and even though they are durable and affordable, people just don't want them anymore. Homebuyers are looking for an affordable option but a durable one as well such as natural or engineered stone such as marble, quartz or granite. It can be a big budget hit, but it will be well worth it on your return.

#7. Built-ins.

Some of the old 1900s homes have a lot of built-ins that were designed with the construction of the house. They were cut into walls, shells and bedrooms were designed, and hidden cabinets were definitely a popular design feature but today, any type of built-in is just not cutting it anymore. In the 1980s popular built-ins were constructed on the side of the wall sticking out from the wall to hold your entertainment system, bookshelves, and knickknacks, but today, people are looking for more minimalistic approach with just the TV mounted on the wall by itself.

#8. Loud or chintz wallpaper.

This literally is back hundred years or more but it came around again in the 1980s and early 90s. Floor wallpaper is still out of date regardless of how many times they try to bring it back around. It can be done right in a vintage flare sort of way but only by a professional or if you have the right I, otherwise, it just looks messy and looks like you've decorated grandma's house.

#9. Dark wood paneling.

Done in the absolute right way can give you a sort of earnest Hemingway type of look but it is very rare and if not done exactly right could just make your home seem like it's out of the 1970s. You can bleach it or paint over it to freshen it up however if the walls are covered by sheets of wood-looking panel, it's time to just pull them off and start over.

#10. Popcorn ceilings.

Oh, those annoying popcorn ceilings. I remember hitting balls and toys against it as a kid as you got snowed on by the dusty plaster. They can be a pain to remove but once they are removed, you'll have a nice, smooth ceiling in which you can paint or simply just avoid getting snowed on anytime the kids are running around upstairs.
